The first meeting of the TF-NOC group behind us

The first meeting of the TF-NOC group behind us
On 2nd and 3rd September in Barcelona was held the first official meeting of TF-NOC working group, created under the auspices TERENA. The event was attended by representatives of the various Network Management Centers, including Wiktor Procyk of the PSNC Management Team.

The TF-NIGHT Task Force (Task Force on Network Management Centers) was established in May 2010 at a meeting in Copenhagen. It was created under the auspices of TERENA to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience associated Management Centers. The group is also developing guidance documents, standards and practices relevant to the members of the groups, institutions and the Management Centers, which have not yet joined the group or are under construction.

The meeting in the Catalan capital was attended by 20 participants from different countries and institutions. The group was presided by Stefan Listrom (NORDUNET). The first working congress was destined to designate the methods and policies of activity, assigning priorities to particular ranges of issues and to systematize work.

During the opening of the meeting, participants shared the problems that bother them and were considered worth consideration in group. They discussed, among others, different variants of confidentiality. Should all the studies be taken as confidential, unless it is explicitly indicated that a report is available for the public (that it will be accessible to all on the website), or should we apply the opposite principle – that everything is publicly available unless the proper notification is made. It was discussed whether certain confidential studies can be made publicly if anonymous, or whether to remove names of specific institutions or persons, etc.

Discussions focused on the methods of obtaining information about individual NOCs, metrics that would allow an objective comparison of the level of activity in various aspects of network management. The fruit of these discussions was an outline of the survey to be conducted among the associated Management Centers. It is worth noting that Wiktor Procyk – representative of the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center – was elected the leader of the task of the communication aspects between the centers of Management.

Subsequent meetings of the TF-NOC will take place 3-4 times per year.
