ILIAD builds on the assets resulting from two decades of investments in policies and infrastructures for the blue economy and aims at establishing an interoperable, data-intensive, and cost-effective Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO). It capitalizes on the explosion of new data provided by many different earth sources, advanced computing infrastructures (cloud computing, HPC, Internet of Things, Big Data, social networking, and more) in an inclusive, virtual/augmented, and engaging fashion to address all Earth Data challenges. It will contribute towards a sustainable ocean economy as defined by the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Ocean, a hub for global, multistakeholder co-operation. The ILIAD DTO will fuse a large volume of diverse data, in a semantically rich and data agnostic approach, including the use of ontologies and a standard style-layered descriptor to facilitate semantic information and intuitive discovery of underlying information and knowledge. ILIAD has been awarded the funding as part of the EU the €1 billion European Green Deal.
Project partners:
The ILIAD Project is comprised of 56 partners from 18 different countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, including industrial companies, end users, academic institutions, research and technology developers and private firms. The consortium coordinator is Netcompany-Intrasoft (previously known as INTRASOFT International) with headquarters in Luxembourg.
PSNC role:
PSNC is responsible of the task related to the implementing the Ocean Interoperability Space, including the design and implementation of the Ocean Information Model (OIM) and Vocabulary. Additionally, PSNC contributes to other related tasks including, among others, the provision of semantically enhanced data discovery and datasets, the implementation of the Ocean Data Space and Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), and the Digital Earth and Digital Twin APIs, as well as in the design and implementation of the Core Citizen science ILIAD ontology.
