PSNC supports an open data environment in Europe

As part of the European Commission’s policy, the European association EOSC aisbl has been established, bringing together more than 100 governmental entities, universities, research and development units and entities from the economic area interested in implementing the concept of open data. The EOSC aisbl Steering Committee (General Assembly), the EOSC Implementation Group and working groups, working to define the principles and plan for open data and open science in accordance with FAIR principles, will work together with a consortium established by PSNC over the next few years (2024-2027) to build an open data ecosystem in Europe.

Dr Eng. Norbert Meyer, Head of the PSNC’s Data Processing Technologies Division and project coordinator, said: PSNC has been selected, among other applying contractors, as the main contractor to build an environment of open data storage services (File Sync and Share), large data transfer in the EOSC environment (Large File Transfer) and application access service (Jupyter – Notebooks and Notebook Hub) for EOSC (European Open Science Cloud).

Access to open data will only be possible by building a number of services provided by the software stack (Fig.)

It should be mentioned that the PSNC infrastructure in EOSC will use the services of the National Data Storage (Universal infrastructure for sharing, storage and effictive processing of large data volumes in HPC, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence models), a project financed from the structural funds of the Operational Programme Innovative Economy (OP IR) under Measure 4.2 – Construction of research infrastructure for science. An important element in the construction of NDS was the concept of Data Lake and the associated data access policy FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable).

The so-called LOT3 – Managed Collaborative Data Platform, Interactive Data Analytics Platform and Visualisation Services for the EOSC Exchange (Application Services) admitted to be one of two contracts that PSNC was awarded under three tender procedures launched by the European Commission – noted Maciej Brzeźniak, Manager of the Data Management Technology Department, chief architect of the system.

The LOT3 service environment will be implemented by a consortium of 5 entities from the fields of science and economy:

  • PSNC – main contractor
    and subcontractors
  • Safespring (cloud services operator in Sweden)
  • Owncloud (developer of cloud solutions and software, Germany)
  • EGI (European Grid Initiative consortium in the Netherlands)
  • Nordunet (network operator in the Baltic countries)
  • CESNET (national network operator in the Czech Republic).
