On October 5th and 6th, the EoCoE (Energy Oriented Center of Excellence) project was officially launched. EoCoE will use the prodigious potential offered by the ever-growing computing infrastructure to foster and accelerate the European transition to a reliable and low carbon energy supply.

Research actions carried out in the VISIONAIR project and aiming in implementation and testing the remote collaboration of multiple designers in locations distributed across the Europe have been completed and presented to wider publicity during two demonstration events in 2014. Research conducted by PSNC and its partners (KTH from Sweden, University of Bristol from U.K., University of Twente from Netherlands, I2CAT from Spain and University of Kaiserslautern from Germany) focused on enabling designers to simultaneously edit complex 3D models and allowing them the live observation of their work results using advanced visualization systems, just to mention holographic table, 3D UHD displays and CAVE. As the basic platform for rendering PSNC proposed VITRALL software, which was previously designed and developed by PSNC. For high resolution visualization requirements, the software was modified and adjusted during the VISIONAIR project.

The number of digital libraries registered in the DLF Digitial Libraries Database reached recently 80, and if the dynamics of growth will be as good as it is, then by the end of the year this number may even reach 100. Because of this, we have decided to prepare a basic analysis showing, which software is presently used in Poland as a basis for digital libraries.

“Phisian’s job in times of intense technological development and universal access to information” – under this motto a conference for regional consultants in Wielkopolski Voivodeship Office was held. Specialists from across the region, representing various fields of medicine, came at the invitation of Deputy Voivode of Wielkopolska region – Przemysław Pacia. One of the speakers was Professor Witold Szyfter who actively cooperates with PSNC.

The rivalry, or so-called “browser war”, is in full swing. The two most popular browsers- Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox recently brought to work their latest and most serious arms.

More and more Poles choose shopping online. According to market research, this year e-commerce sales will increase by 1 to 7.5 billion zł. This is the best result of the last few years. However in comparison to other countries, Poland’s position is rather weak.

“Automatic recognition of musical notation” and “Artificial intelligence and agent systems in computer games” turned out to be the best theses in the competition of Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center and the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry PAS in 2010.

In the latest TOP500 ranking “Reef” – supercomputer working at the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center – was about half the rate, at the 312 position. The winner of the race was China.

Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center Security Team conducted a set of comparative tests of Web browsers, addressing resilience to attacks on SSL/TLS encrypted tunnels. Particular emphasis was put on if the browsers are able to detect those attacks at all and how the user is informed (including the users without specialized knowledge on IT issues).

28th February, 2010 was the deadline for submission of reports on the application of The Commission Recommendation on Digitisation and Online Accessibility of Cultural Material and Digital Preservation. Poland, as a Member State of the European Union, was also obliged to submit such report on the current implementation stage. You can download it here.

In the today’s issue of the “Przekrój” magazine (3/3369) you can find an article of Piotr Stanisławski titled “Narodziny e-książki” (“The Birth of the E-book”). It contains interesting introduction in the e-paper technology and presents positive and negative aspects of e-books. The article is also enriched with quotations of representatives of several large Polish publishers, referring to the future of e-books in Poland.
