On 27 of May the LION Foundation is organizing the fifth world videoconference with otolaryngology and neurological surgeries. The essence of the project is an interactive simultaneous live transmission from the operating tables of various parts of the world. Interactive, because the payee will be able to question doctors by moderators.

Problems faced by entrepreneurs and scientists who set up cooperation in the commercialization of research results, the commercial value of the results of scientific projects, willingness of Polish research centers to supply products with both scientific and market value and the willingness of enterprises to take advantage of this research in their business. There were a lot of topics discussed at the conference in Gdańsk Science and Technology Park, because although the idea of commercialization of science is not controversial, it still faces many challenges.

Digital culture and all the opportunities granted to users by new media are leading to reflection on the role and future activities of memory institutions in this extremely interesting times. This cultural transformation were the main topic of “Transforming Culture in the digital age” conference which was held on 14th – 16th of April in Estonian city Tartu.

“Science is a source of innovation” – Professor Jan Węglarz argued during his speech on the second day of the Economic Forum of the Poznań Agglomeration. According to the director of PSNC Poznań agglomeration is a center of innovation in Poland, but the conditions provided to Polish science lead to her slow decline. On the evidence of those powerful words professor quoted data on government funding of scientific research centers in the country. Despite assurances by politicians to increase budgetary spending for this purpose up to 2% of GDP by 2013, the budget for education in 2010-2011 was only 0.42% of GDP.

The second edition of the International Conference GeeCON associated with the language JAVA, which took place last week in Poznan, ended in organizational success as well as for the Poznan Supercomputing Network Center.

This is how the second edition of the Conference Polish Java User Group – GeeCON 2010 in Poznań has been entitled. This meeting was focused on Java and Java Virtual Machine based technologies, with special attention to dynamic languages like Groovy and Ruby. PSNC was a key partner of GeeCON conference, supporting organizers with its knowledge, infrastructure and experience.

Creating the investment attractiveness of the Poznań agglomeration, supporting the development of economic co-operation and the exchange of experiences between local governments are the aims of the third edition of the Economic Forum of the Poznań Agglomeration. The annual meetings are devoted to the issues of stimulating investments in the Poznań agglomeration in the long run, EURO 2012 investments or technological innovations in the region.

On 14-15 of April 2010 in Kiev, Ukraine the IV conference “Library and Book in the Context of Time” was held. The conference scope joins scientific topics with the information useful for practitioners. The main organizer of this conference is the National Parliament Library of Ukraine. In this year the main topic of the conference was “Libraries activities on the preservation of national cultural heritage”.

Internet in Poland is the development of democracy – claims the Department for Information Technology Development
of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. This is due to the fact that Poles are increasingly using the network to express their views and to organize themselves. In fact, this year many long expected projects are going to be launched in order to increase the infrastructure development of information society.

GeeCON is an international conference that will focus on Java language and Java Virtual Machine based technologies. GeeCON will become a forum for sharing experiences about modern software development methodologies, enterprise architectures, design patterns, distributed computing!

The EU FP7 DORII project coordinated by PSNC was awarded for the best technical demo during 5th EGEE User Forum in Uppsala.

On the 1st of March 2010 on the Europeanę projects group website an annual activity report was published. Section 4.4 of this report unfortunately contains outdated data (coming probably from August 2009, from the “Europeana Content Strategy” document), and according to this data the Polish participation in Europeana is lower than 1%.
