Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) is pleased to announce that the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences has joined the PSNC’s IBM Quantum Innovation Center.
The PSNC, affiliated with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), was the first institution in Central Europe to join the IBM Quantum Network as a Quantum Innovation Center in February 2022. The aim of the project was to strengthen national competence in quantum informatics and support the development of applications of this cutting-edge technology. The project leverages cloud access to IBM quantum computers, on which computational experiments in various areas of scientific challenges were launched.
Since the beginning of the project, two domestic institutions have already joined PSNC’s IBM Quantum Innovation Center: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IITiS PAN) is the third member of PSNC’s Quantum Innovation Center.
IITiS PAN is a research unit, conducting scientific activities in the field of information technology. One of the main areas of the Institute’s activity is quantum computing, especially aspects related to the techniques of programming quantum computers, creating quantum algorithms and applications of solutions using quantum computing. In 2001, IITiS PAN’s Quantum Information Systems Team was established, focusing its research work in field on the technical aspects of systems, based on the principles of quantum information processing in applications, such as operational research and information transmission.
For many years, IITiS PAN has been participating in the educating of scientific personnel with unique advanced knowledge in the field of quantum informatics. Scientists who obtained their PhDs in quantum informatics at IITiS PAN in recent years are now involved in research positions, in both large multinational companies and startups that build solutions based on quantum technologies. They have also received awards in international programming competitions, related to quantum algorithmics, and their scientific achievements have been rewarded by the Foundation for Polish Science as well as Kosciuszko Foundation, among others. Currently, the training of young researchers in quantum computing is carried out within the doctoral programs, organized in cooperation with both units of the Polish Academy of Sciences and also with universities and research institutes. This allows those preparing their doctorates at IITiS PAN to get knowledge related to the latest developments in quantum technologies and acquire skills related to the quantum machine programming techniques.
The Institute has also been involved in the promotion and organization of international cooperation for many years. For more than 15 years, the Institute has been responsible for coordinating Quantiki.org, an international platform for researchers and enthusiasts working in the field of quantum computing. Thanks to its openness, the platform is accessible to a wide audience and has gained considerable international popularity. Quantiki is widely recognized in the quantum computing community and is a conduit for information exchange between research institutions, universities and industry.
Since 2022, the Institute has been a member of the National Center for Quantum Informatics, which is a scientific unit that brings together institutions of the scientific and academic community in Poland.
Research related to quantum informatics carried out at IITiS PAN is largely focused on creating new solutions using the potential of quantum computers. IITiS PAN’s membership within PSNC’s IBM Quantum Innovation Center will allow it to use the potential of the leading platform for quantum computing to conduct innovative and unique scientific research. IITiS PAN has extensive experience in programming quantum computers. The capabilities offered by IBM Quantum will provide an opportunity to further explore and develop new solutions in the rapidly progressing field of quantum computing.
