Polish PRACE-LAB and PRACE-LAB2 HPC installations in the TOP500

A brand new TOP500 list revealing the fastest supercomputers in the world was released during this year’s Supercomputing in Atlanta (17–22.11.2024). The list includes computing systems from PRACE-LAB and PRACE-LAB2 projects, which are key Polish high efficiency computing infrastructures. These two TOP500 entries confirm Poland’s strong position on the global arena of computing development.

PRACE-LAB2 project, which ended earlier this year, provided Polish scientists with state-of-the-art computing resources, designed to meet the requirements of hybrid solutions that use both classic HPC and AI. Two systems launched as part of this project chart within TOP500:

Proxima (#93) from PSNC, which is used for carrying out advanced simulations and training large AI models,

Kraken-Fregata (#185) from Gdańsk Tech, which supports AI enhanced predictive modeling and real time data analysis, among others.

Those systems were designed for a wide range of use including typical HPC job, such as simulations and modeling, and effective support for AI tasks like natural language processing, picture and video analysis, as well as large scale machine learning experiments.

TOP500 also features two PRACE-LAB clusters from 2020:

Altair (#291) from PSNC,

Ares (#490) from Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH in Kraków.

Both of them were designed with advanced scientific and engineering tasks. Their job is to support HPCs in climate modeling, molecular simulations and research on new materials, among others.
